Sound! Euphonium Bring Viewers Fallin Love with Classical Music

みなさん、こんにちは, Amarin's here! ;)
I've just watched anime from last spring season, name Sound! Euphonium. Comes from the same studio with K-On, Kyoto Animation bring back the anime genre of school, music and slice of life. If K-ON has a lighter storyline and many sense of humor, Sound! Euphonium appear more stately and quite serious. Somehow it feels nostalgic with my school lifes which makes my heart moved by the stories, almost close to the real life.

Synopsis :
Kumiko Oumae decided to join orchestra band in her school together with her classmates Hazuki Katou and Sapphire Kawashima. Initially Kumiko hesitated to join the club because of Reina Kousaka-her former junior high school friend, are also join in the same club. An incident that occured in the past made Kumiko feels guilty to be friends again with Reina.

What I like [spoiler alert!]  :

1. Story
By deciding to join club in your school, makes your school life filled with ups and downs. You would feel comfortable in there because you like that activity and the club has a nice & cool members or it might be your school has a good-looking conselor teacher (I mean it’s you Taki-sensei), however it would feels difficult as hell when you feel depressed in it mostly because of despair or having problems with other members. Well, Sound! Euphonium presented the both ways. The story itself based on light novel by Ayano Takeda. We can see the improvement of Kitauji band orchestra from each episode and also it shows new conflict that happened. The drama that shown from every conflict were expressed pretty slick of each character. That’s what makes my emotional sucked into the storyline.

2. The Protagonist
Kumiko’s character was not created to be outstanding, what I mean is she did not have cheerful side and moe character. Even the instrument she played was Euphonium, which is it is the instrument that you rarely found in the common school. The only thing that stands out from Kumiko is her experience playing euphonium for 7 years. From that hetare (へたれ) character, she improved a lot and slowly becomes special when she realized her love for Euphonium and strive to be better. I was impressed immediately right after I saw Kumiko crying and it makes me motivated by the same thing, I want to be better than everyone. My thougths are like “aaah Kumiko Oumae is really something”.

3. Music
Sound! euphonium has magnificent music coverage in its class. Or if I have to say, this is the best anime music that ever produced! The selection of the classic songs were not randomly pick, we can enjoy the works of famous composers in this anime such as Jacques Offenbach and Antonín Dvořák. I’m new to classical music so I’m immediately looked it after and found this

The soundtrack album really worth to buy! We can enjoy all of the songs in this anime. Yes all of them! Even the melody of each instruments that being played. If you curious what songs were played in several episode you will find everything in this album. My favorite was the song that Taki-sensei played in his phone and solo trumpet. Every time I heard Reina solo trumpet I remember Kaori-senpai smiling face, which makes my heart moved and eyes glazed, like I can catch on what Kaori-senpai feels. Over all the music beyond what we were expected. It is beautiful, indeed. It is the soul of the film.

4. Friendship
I liked to see friendship between the classmates circle Kumiko, Hazuki and Sapphire. Go home together, join the same club, tell the stories of each other this is what we do when we were in school, so flashback! And I think it became more intense when Hazuki fall in love with Tsukamoto-Kumiko’s childhood friend, and we can smells a love triangle case would happen between them. The other side of them one by one seen when Hazuki suffered heartbreak.

The chemistry between Kumiko and Reina went pretty slowly and were revealed clearly in episode 8. Where Kumiko accidentally took Reina went to matsuri together. Reina’s confession about Kumiko is interesting to see, besides this is the first time we have seen Reina has been talk a lot and also because of Reina looks very kawaii with her one piece dress- surely.

But I’ve always been drawn to that side of you, It’s like you put on a kind, good-girl face, but inside, you’re actually really distant. It makes me want to peel that good-girl skin off of you” - Reina’s confession love to Kumiko
That was the weirdest love confession but this is Reina the arrogant who said that, so that was so sweet indeed! Moreover the relationship between senior x junior built really well. Asuka-senpai is one of a kind. And also I’m quite surprised with Nakagawa-senpai, she was like half-hearted kind of people at first but actually really nice and supportive though, sugoi-ne~~.

5. Taki-sensei
Oh well this point is just an optional but I could not resist though hehe. I hope there will always be part of the ensemble in each episode, so I can see Taki-sensei as a conductor :p

Final thoughts :
As you can read from above points, this anime has so much good points to learn. Like I mentioned before, I'm new to classical music and I learned pretty much from this anime. Not only from the songs but also the instruments. You don't have to be someone who understand classical music to love this anime, because I believe this anime will suitable for everyone. Once again, Kyoto Animation proved are able to present such as excellence entertainment. Let's wait excitedly for another Kyoto Animation next work. And perhaps this review will guide you to watch the anime soon.
